Wolverhampton

Project Overview

This council-run nursery extension was designed to create additional early years spaces for the growing Eastfield community. The project focuses on warmth, calm, and connection to nature - delivering a nurturing environment that supports play, learning, and wellbeing.

The Brief

Eastfield Nursery required additional early years accommodation to meet increasing demand, with a strong emphasis on creating a welcoming, sensory-rich space for young children. The building needed to feel calm and inclusive, support indoor–outdoor play, and align with long-term sustainability goals set by the local authority.

The Solution

We designed and delivered a bespoke nursery extension using a timber frame system tailored to the site and client requirements. Internally, the space is lined with poplar timber cladding and finished with an acoustic Troldtekt ceiling, helping to manage sound levels while maintaining a warm, natural aesthetic.

A standout design feature is the use of Organoid dried flower wallpaper, introducing natural texture, gentle scent, and a sensory richness rarely found in educational settings. Large sliding doors allow daylight to flood the interior and create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging movement, exploration, and play.

The Outcome

The completed extension provides Eastfield Nursery with a calm, flexible early years environment that supports both learning and wellbeing. The thoughtful material palette, strong indoor–outdoor connection, and sensory design elements create a space that feels nurturing and engaging for children and staff alike.

To support long-term sustainability and reduce operational costs, solar panels were incorporated into the design, ensuring the building performs efficiently while remaining environmentally responsible.
