Project Overview

This single-storey modular nursery building was designed to provide much-needed additional early years space for Tops Day Nursery in Portsmouth. Created to expand provision for local families and NHS staff, the project delivers a bright, accessible, and practical environment for young children.

The Brief

Tops Day Nursery required additional early years accommodation to support growing demand, particularly from NHS staff working at the nearby hospital. The new space needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing nursery, provide safe and accessible facilities for children aged 3–4, and include secure outdoor play provision.

The Solution

We designed and delivered a single-storey modular nursery building providing accommodation for sixteen children aged 3–4. The internal layout includes:

• A bright classroom with food preparation facilities
• A children’s WC and a fully accessible WC
• Secure access and dedicated parking

To ensure the building blended naturally with its surroundings, the design was developed in harmony with the adjacent single-storey nursery. Externally, the building is finished in durable Accoya timber cladding, chosen to complement neighbouring structures and provide long-term performance.

A new access ramp ensures full accessibility, while a large, secure outdoor play area supports outdoor learning and active play.

The Outcome

The completed nursery provides Tops Day Nursery with valuable additional capacity in a setting that feels calm, welcoming, and purpose-built for early years education. The thoughtful design, robust materials, and strong indoor–outdoor connection ensure the building meets both immediate needs and long-term operational requirements, supporting families and staff within the local community.
